' Riven' is the direct sequel to 'Myst,' one of the most well-known point-and-click adventure games ever created. Like its predecessor, 'Riven' has almost no violence or outer conflict and instead relies upon atmosphere and clever puzzles to pull the player in. Unfortunately, Riven cannot run on modern computers straight out of the box due to hardware and software limitations. You can, however, tweak several game files to get the game working. It may still crash occasionally, but some functionality is at least better than none. Instructions 1. Open the Start menu, and select 'Control Panel.'
Double-click the 'Add or Remove Programs' icon-or the 'Programs and Features' icon in Windows Vista-and scroll down the list of installed programs until you come across the entry for Quicktime. Select 'Quicktime,' and uninstall it from the menu. Install 'Riven,' and allow it to install its own version of Quicktime. Download and install an updated version of Quicktime once the 'Riven' install has finished. Riven will recognize the updated Quicktime player once it has finished installing. Download and install the Riven 1.02 Patch. This will update the game and increase its compatibility with newer systems.
Open 'My Computer,' and go to the Riven installation directory. The default directory is 'C: Program Files Riven.' Right-click the 'Mohawk.w32' file in the Riven directory, and select 'Open With.' Select 'Notepad' from the list of programs, then click 'OK.'
This will allow you to edit the 'Mohawk.w32' file in Notepad. Locate the line that reads 'fEnableAudioProxy=true' in the file, then change it to 'fEnableAudioProxy=false.'
This will allow 'Riven' to properly utilize the Quicktime installation. Save the file, and launch 'Riven.'
It should function properly now. Tags: This will, Download install, Mohawk file, This will allow, version Quicktime, will allow.

But I keep getting a message 'The version of this file is not compatible with the Version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information.'
I'm running in admin mode, and have attempted changing compatibility on the 'SETUP.EXE' file to both Win 95 & Win 98/ME - still no joy. I've searched these forums for help but haven't found what might apply to this specific problem. I'm tired of thrashing around - please help! Hi, all, hope to get some help here. I'm tired of thrashing around - please help! Welcome to the Forums! In general, 1. Install Riven to your C: drive, and accept the install defaults.
Be certain that Riven is saving games on C. If you have a very small C: drive that's reserved for system files only, install Riven to D. Be certain that Riven is saving games on D. Do NOT install either Riven or QuickTime to a USB external drive. Start Riven from a fresh boot. Reboot, log into Vista with full Administrator privileges (not into a Limited User or Power User account).
Close all open applications. Disable all tasks running in the background, especially anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs, task schedulers, remote system control programs (such as Microsoft NetMeeting) or other programs shown on the Windows task bar. Do NOT run any other programs before starting Riven. Never boot up with a disc in any drive. If the Riven CD autostarts when inserted into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop. Always start Riven with the Desktop shortcut/start icon, not from the CD.
Have you followed the instructions exactly in?
Check your specs. In order to run Windows Vista you must have at least an 800 MHz processor (1 GHz is recommended), 512 MB RAM (1 GB is recommended), 15 GB of hard disk space (20 GB is recommended), and a DirectX 9 graphics card.
Different programs will have different system requirements. To check your system specs in Windows XP, open the Start menu and right-click My Computer. From the menu, select Properties. This will open the System Properties window. In the General tab, your system specifications will be listed under the Computer heading.
Set your BIOS to boot from CD. To do this, restart the computer and enter the setup screen when the manufacturer logo appears. The key to do this will be displayed, and varies by manufacturer. The most common keys are F2, F10, F12, and Del. Once in the BIOS menu, select the Boot menu. Change the order of devices so that your computer boots from CD before booting from the hard drive.
Save your changes and exit. Your computer will restart. If you are, then you will need to set the BIOS to boot from removable storage.
So far, when I turn on Riven, it will intialy run just fine. However, when I leave the game, after having saved progress in a file, Riven will not remember that saved file.
As a result, you end up beginning the game all over again. Even if you go to File Explorer and click on that saved file, it will not run. I honestly haven't tried to figure out why that file will not run, so I'll try to solve that if I can. Furthermore, once you have played the game for awhile on Windows 10, Riven may just freeze, while no controls work. The only thing that will work is pressing the Windows key on the key board and then clicking on whatever selections appeared on that task bar, that showed up.
I tried to open another window during the game freeze, but that didn't work. So far, to get out of a frozen Riven: I have to press the windows key on the keyboard, then select the windows selection on the task bar that appears, then click 'power' to select 'restart' for the computer. Another annoying issue with Riven is that the game will crash. One minute you are enjoying the game, the next it suddenly disappears and you are back to the Steam page, which was running in the background as you played Riven. I have tried to change the 'launch set-up' options; by right clicking the word 'Riven' in the Steam Library list, then selcting 'properties', finally discovering 'launch set-up options'- something like that. On that page, I changed it to ' /affinity 1'.
This was done in following the instructions I found on Steam for preventing Riven from crashing. Blackberry pearl 8120 wifi setup. My questions are: Is Riven designed so that it will only work based on old computer hardware?
Windows Vista Install Disk Download
Is it possible to make it so that Riven will know to run only using what it needs to run, while operating on newer processers like Windows 10? Try using compatibility mode. whatever drive you have it on C for most people - Program Files It might be Program Files (x86) - Steam - steamapps - common - Riven.
That could be entirely wrong depending on where you installed it to, but basically you have to find the Riven folder. Within that folder, find the application. It should end in.exe. Right-click it and select properties. Click on the compatibility tab, try setting it to win xp service pack 3, if that does not fix the problem also try vista and me. Windowed mode also can help.
Thank you for the detailed instructions; it certainly helped. So far the only hiccups have been: 1) After following your instructions Noitalever, I go to turn the game on via Steam. As soon as it starts to run, there was a pop-up saying that it could not load saved game and was starting a new one. 2) Riven was then up and running. While in the course of playing the game, it did freeze up. However, before doing anything to solve the freeze, I left the computer to do something else. When I came back, Riven was back to running smoothly.
How To Play Riven
Is there a loading issue with Riven? The freeze up is reaccuring, but then will go back to working after a little time. You are welcome. First see if this is something that repeatedly happens or if it is a one time thing. It might work better under a different compatibility mode for some people 95 actually worked best. You can also change the number of processors while playing the game, the compatibility mode may have messed up your prior settings through steam; Run the game, tab out and open task manager with crtl-alt-delete.
How To Install Riven Mod
Go to the processes tab and select riven.exe, right click it and choose 'Set Affinity.' Uncheck all the CPUs except for the first one, which should be CPU 0. You would need to do that everytime you play. No fix anytime soon I am afraid. May need to try installing an older version of quicktime, 'havent tested these instructions on a computer running Windows 10 that cannot run it in compatility mode alone so we will may need to do some tinkering until it works); Try running in compatibility mode for windows 95(also try 98 if that does not work), as well as checking the boxes to run in 256 color mode and 640x480 screen resolution, and disable visual themes. Download Quicktime 4.1.2 from the following link, try installing it without compatibility mode at first and see if it opens, if seems to run without error go ahead and exit out and try running Riven, otherwise uninstall and run the installer in compatibility mode and be sure to set the program to open in the same compatibility mode, try compatibitity mode for Windows 7 and work your way down until it works.
Please let me know how it goes.
