This is a short guide on how to quickly determine if your S.T. Dupont Linge (Line) 2 Lighter is authentic. These are the lighters most 'faked' on Ebay. There are also counterfeit Gatsby lighters I have seen on Ebay as well. Usually persons selling have little to no feedback, 100 points or less.
A lot are from China, but it isn't hard to setup an account to make it look like your somewhere your not. Also the selling party might not even realize that the lighter is a fake, the Line 2 counterfeit lighters look exactly like real ones, depending on model/design being counterfeited. If the selling party does not picture the bottom of the lighter, where the serial number is, its Probably fake. If it looks the the numbers are lined up perfectly, if they are engraved, its fake. ST Dupont stamps their lighters with numbers not aligned in a straight line, some numbers looking higher or lower then others.
Counterfeited line 2 have serials engraved in a straight line. Even if your lighter doesn't look like one of the lighters pictured below it still could be fake. Fakes change on a regular basis to try to keep up with ST Dupont. Top instructions (yellowish) are genuine warranty card on the left is genuine, its not as dark as the fake Its also possible to place a fake ST Dupont lighter, in a genuine box. I have seen it done several times on Ebay.
The insert in the gift boxes have sharply raised angled edges, genuine boxes have only very slightly raised edges, almost hard to notice in most pictures. Also you can notice the color difference, though my camera isn't perfect when representing true color. All pictures the box to the left is genuine Counterfeit Line 2 lighters are heavier then real ones. MOST IMPORTANT, SURE SIGN! If there is no paint underneath the Cap for the refill valve, its almost definitely fake, though its possible to be a replacement with no color dot. All Line 2 Lighters have a yellow paint dot underneath the cap of the refill valve representing to use the gold Dupont Butane refill can (see picture below).
If it comes with a brass butane adapter (unless it screws in) its probably Counterfeit. You should need to screw in the butane canister refill, and we (as well as ST Dupont) recommend to only use Dupont Butane gas in ALL ST Dupont Lighters. Its also possible for the paint to have chipped off inside the cap, but if that has happened, you should be able to find some pieces of the paint in the cap. Line 2 lighters now retail for over $700, most $900 retail. If it NEW and cheap, its probably fake. If selling party calls it anything but 'ST Dupont' then its probably a fake lighter. Sellers do this to get around ebays keyword check.
The Sound when the lighter is opened should be a pleasant lasting sound, in my experience the Ping sound dulls with use. The counterfeit ST Dupont makes an awful metallic 'cling' which differs greatly from a real ST Dupont ping sound. There is a screw holding a metal plate inside the top of the lid that can become loose. If you have a used ST Dupont its possible somebody has removed it to prevent it from ruining the sound of the lid when opened.
If you hear a rattling when lifting lid then it could be this plate coming loose. All you need is a small flat head screw driver to tighten it. Though be very careful not to scratch anything while you are in there. Also turn down the flame adjuster as much as possible before sticking your face directly over the butane valve.

First you need to identify which type of fuel cartridge you need. You can determine this by looking inside the cap you screwed off to expose the fill valve. The inside o f the cap will be color coded red, gold, blue, or green.
Use a Dupont refill cartridge of the corresponding color. You can refuel a Dupont lighter using a steady hand and a regular butane cannister, but I don't recommend it. I broke the valve on one of mine that way after successfully refueling it for over a year. I was traveling a lot, and had a hard time finding Dupont fuel cartridges, so I got in the practice of using whatever butane I could find. Don't do this.
Even if you've got practice at it, you'll probably break your lighter eventually and they're expensive to fix. There are metal screw-in adapters available, which will work just fine, too. Again, these are coded as to the type of lighter indicated by the color under the fill cap. So, once you have either a metal adapter or a Dupont cartridge that fits your lighter, remove the fill cap, lightly press down on the valve stem to release any remaining gas and air which may have leaked in, and then firmly screw in either the gas cartridge or the adapter. If you're using a gas cartridge, simply let it sit until the cartridge is visibly empty, and then quickly unscrew the cartridge. The cartridges are single use, and your lighter is now refueled.
If you're using an adapter, use a butane can with a cone shaped plastic sleeve over the valve stem, and press firmly against the hole in the adapter. Fill until butane begins to leak around plastic sleeve, remove the butane can and quickly unscrew the adapter. Some people recommend freezing the lighter first, by placing it in the freezer for several minutes. The theory is that a cold lighter will allow a larger amount of fuel in before the pressure balances against the remainders in the cartridge.
I haven't found this to actually give any benefit. If more fuel is successfully transferred to the lighter this way, it's a very small amount and doesn't make a significant difference. When refueling, it's also a good time to check your flint.
Running a flint too short can result in pushing the flint ram against the striker and cutting a groove in the flint ram. It'll still work after you've damaged the ram in that way, but it's a preventable bit of damage and really annoying should you accidentally do so. There's some easy ways to detect cheapish fakes. There's some more elaborate ones on the market, but not many. Serial number.
Stamped on bottom by hand, so IRREGULAR. 6-8 characters (numbers and capitals) at most. 'lack de chine' present on lighters that don't have any 3. Colour-code of required refill inside filling cap 4.
Initials of employee who made it behind the flint roller when you remove it. Most popular models (diamond head, Lackue de chine) most likely to be fake. Most important: price. Don't expect a real one new for under 250 US $. I've been buying and selling them for a while & I don't know where you can look up the serial numbers, if at all.
It would be very useful but on the other hand, if it were eas ily accessible, there's nothing to stop the determined faker from copying e.g. Ligne 2 models & using genuine corresponding serial numbers on them. ST Dupont may have a record of all the lighters they've produced. Ligne 1, 2 and ' D ', Gatsby, Urban, models have hand-stamped serial numbers, not machined. They are irregular and not perfectly aligned.

I Also hear of 'PING'? I have used a Savilelli for some time, and I'm told it's the same basic Design, this is the Best I know so far.
I hear there are a LOT of fakes, so HELP! Here is a cut and paste from a cigarfamily.com post on this subject: How can you tell? Pay attention at the following details: 1. Bottom Markings: a) Dupont Mark (square): use a 10x loupe you should see the mark has good detail with the very small dupont word imprinted in the little square. B)ST Dupont Paris Laque De Chine should be engraved not machine stamped, you can see the edges are sharp.
C)The serial numbers from the FAKES appear to have the same fonts similiar to the markings in (b). Pay attention at the stamping presure applied you can see that it is stamped at the same time as the markings in (b). Also the serial numbers and letters in the FAKES are more evently condensed, the spacing between each serial letter look about the same as the marking in (b).
This is FAKE duponts. You can go the eBay and check them out AUTHENTIC DUPONT: has Serial number marked at a different time as the markings in (b). You can see the font used is different, the spacing between letters of the serial is about the size of 2 serial letters putting together.
The depth of the engraved (again not stamped) serial is DIFFERENT than that of the marking in (b). Overall you can see an apparent different look between the the Serial and the marking in (b). That is an authentic dupont.
If serial looks uniformly the same as marking in (b) then it is cleary a FAKE. Here is the example to illustrate: FAKE: S.T.Dupont PARIS MADE IN FRANCE LAQUE DE CHINE 920EB27 AUTHENTIC: S.T.Dupont PARIS MADE IN FRANCE LAQUE DE CHINE 9 2 0 E B 2 7 2. Colors: Fake gold color is more red (copper) rather than yellow (gold) Fake palladium color is more stainless steel like than platinum like 3.
Lacquer works: Many new Fakes show uneven finish, rough and sratchy when you turn and reflect it under a light to see its surface. Authentic new dupont lacquer is even, smooth edge to edge and even level with the metal trim. 4.Metal works: Open the lighter lid, look at the lower edge where the lid shut down on. Fake has cross marks (by machine cross section cut) and some time clamp marks. Authentic one is even and smooth without any clamp marks and cross mark. Bottom screw caps: Fakes cap edge is more sharp.
Authentic cap edge is much smoother.
Where did you get it from? It should obviously be made of genuine materials (silver, black chinese laquer, etc.). It should have all of the stamps and trade marks on the bottom. It should accept the genuine refills tubes.
Check under the screw in cover on the bottom and sse if there is a color present. This will indicate which refill it accepts. The ping, depending on age and condition should sound clear and true. Sorry, but I don't know how else to describe it. If you paid less than $100 for it, it is almost certainly fake. Especially if you bought it on ebay. Actually lots of the fakes are quite hefty and good quality lighters.
They also generally have correct markings such as 'Made in France' or whatever (counterfeiters can read too). The only true way to know that I'm aware of is this: The serial number on a real Dupont lighter is hand stamped, number by number and so the numbers will not be perfectly aligned. That is, each number will be slightly out of line with the others (or at least some of them will be).

All of the fakes I have seen I have been able to tell, even the better ones. But then again, I was comparing it, rather then looking at it blindly.
